cd/dvd burner won't burn cd's! ! !

help!!! i have a dell dimension e510 and about a month ago, the cd/dvd burner decided not to recognize blank cd's and refused to burn cd's. it will recognize and burn dvd's just not cd's. any suggestions?

kjtaylor1, I don't know what burning program you are using. I use Nero7 that has the settings either CD or DVD. It might be just a setting.

Those drives use two lasers - one for CDs and one for DVDs. Could be the CD laser has gone South. You could try getting a laser lens cleaner. Aside from that, you will probably need a new drive. they are pretty inexpensive.

Have you tried running the Optical Drive test from the Dell Diagnostics? Press F12 when you see the prompt during boot and choose diagnostics from the boot menu. This will tell you if there is a hardware problem with the drive.
