My cd drive will no longer read any of my burned cds that use to previously work just fine. Why does it read any non-burned cd just fine but when i try a burned one (that use to work) it just keeps spinning and ejects it out. Reminds me of vending machines and dollars that aren't straight :P. I tried a search but none of the information has helped me. Only thing i can think of doing is cleaning the lazer or replacing the drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate having to ask for help :(

if it used to read them and now won't, I'd say your drive is on its way out - or the controllers on your motherboard are.

Worst case scenario, if purchasing a new drive doesn't solve the problem, you may need to replace the motherboard.

I seriously doubt the motherboard has anything to do with it. if running a lenscleaning disk in your CDROM doesn't help then the drive is probably showing signs of wear & tear. Ditch it and get another. Cheap fix.

I have an HP Vectra that worked perfectly for about 2 years. Then the CD drive started making noises, trying to read a disk that wasn't there right from the moment that the machine begins POSTing. This continues for about 3 minutes and then the drive drawer pops open. Since I only use the Vectra as a backup when a faster machine is having problems, I taped the drive shut with some duck tape.

That's not the type of problem that will be fixed with a device driver reinstall.

Most likely, in your case as well, it would be more cost effective to replace the drive than to repair it.

In defense of Compaq/HP, I'm not sure that the drive was the one that shipped with the Vectra.

and she's looking out for you.
