CD-Drive not recognizing blank cds

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio laptop with acceptable features. its a pretty new computer too. The problem is that my CD-Drive (which does say DVD-Rom and CD Re-Writable on it) does not recognize blank cds. The strange thing is that it recognizes every other type of cd (ex. music cds, DVD's) but once i pop in a blank cd, and look under my computer, its not there. its also not recognized in any other programs such as Windows Media Player or Nero. So if someone could help me out with this issue, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Summary: Okay,I went through Method 1 and did up to step 6. But No Low Filters were found in that part of the registry. The Cd drive is recognized now when I go to 'My Computer' there is the icon to go to it.....
Summary: My CD-ROM an CD/RW drives are not recognized, too. Only if they have a disc inside when I boot up. But when I open and close the drives and try to open they the error message 'drive is not accessible'...
Summary: Help. My CD/RW Rom has not worked in some time. The message I receive is that the drive is not recognized. The drive is now useless. I installed XP in Feb and it work fine for a awhile. I had ME ...
