My wifes friends computer has no system sound, I.E: desktop themes, closing windows, etc..CD's and games play fine, the sound is fine. she did have a virus that had attacked a .DLL pertaining to sound, so I assume thats the problem, but she lost the product code for her WinXP cd, so reinstalling XP over itself is not an option until she finds it, any other suggestions?

Open Volume Control.
Make sure that Mute all is not selected, and adjust the volume and balance controls to the levels you prefer.
The controls in Volume Control are different for different sound devices. If any Mute check boxes except microphone input are checked, this might be the cause of your problem. Consult your sound device documentation or contact the manufacturer for more information. Is your sound cable plugged into the appropriate jack on your sound device or computer? Sometimes if you plug it into the wrong jack, some sounds will play and others won't. Are your speakers connected to each other?
Try updating the BIOS from the manufacturer's website.
Also if you want to reinstall Windows XP and cou can't find the product key, you can use tyhis free utility to retrive it from the registry:

Hope this helps.
