I have been having problems with my new computer. I have several CD RW's that were writen on a window 98 computer using both adaptec CD-NOW software as well as simple copying to make backups of my digital pictures and documents.
The problem is that on the CDRW with documents...the computer running XP doesn't even show the files when i click on the icon for the CDRW at all! It as if it isn't compatible. On theCDRW's with photos, the new computer will not allow me to add anything to the CDRW at all. It tells me I must erase the CDRW for the new pictures to be copied???????It says it isn't a compatible format...they are jpegs. It does show the pics when i click on them. What is going on as I thought all of this stuff is suppose to be compatible.
If I take the CDRW and burn them to a CD-R then it will see the documents just fine so what could be going on?
Thanks
Ray

The problem is, on your Win98 computer, you used UDF packet writing software such as Adaptec's Direct CD. Without this program (or any such packet writing/reading software)installed on your XP machine, you won't see the files. And you also won't be able to write files in this method without it installed on the XP machine.

XP does have the drag and drop ability, but it is not packet writing.

Thanks so much. I was getting so frustrated that I was getting set to bring the computer back!
Is there good packet writing softaware available or is it only for Win98? I can't seem to get the hang of this CDRW with this new software.
Also, does this mean that the CDRW's will not be able to be read on another machine running XP?
Is there any benefit to the new software?
All the files that I copy have this funky little arrow under them and I am not sure if they are even on the CDRW!
Thanks.
Ray

I was just having the same problem and came here looking for answers. I wrote a CDRW with lots of jobfiles in about 50 directories on my office computer using win98 and easy CD creator. Disk was formatted with direct CD and the files were copied to the CDRW in windows explorer. When I brought the disk home, my home computer with Win 98 & easy CD creator read it fine. A new computer with win XP & inCD would read some directories fine but showed most as empty directories. I would think it should read all or none. Why it behaved like this is still a mystery.
But, installing easy CD creator on the unit with win XP solved the problem. I can now read all the files.
