Cd rom won't read some discs

I'm having problems with my cd rom and cd writer. Neither one of them were reading audio cds and the cd rom wouldn't read certain games. I did a search of messages here and found one that was posted on Oct. 12 titled "Help! CD Rom drive won't detect cd" I read response 2 and I have recently installed nero so I tried what he said. After doing so I tried an audio disc and it worked. When I tried a game however, it still won't read the cd. I get a message asking me to insert a cd into drive E. This only happens with some games, not all of them. My cd writer will read the disc but my cd rom will not. Can anyone suggest anything to help me?

DOes it happen to the same certain games, or only once in awhile?? I had the same problem, and the cdrw the eye was screwed up (basically went bad) so i had to get a new one.

It happens with the same games. I've noticed it on games that I've recently purchased. Regarding your problem, are you saying I may need to replace my cd rom?

It depends, how old is your cd drive? I was running 4x 4x 12x...Nowadays there up 48x 32x 48x....So to me instead of dealing with it not reading, I bought a sony Rewrite for $60. Other than that, your running XP, so it shouldnt be a software problem like nero, for it to read music. Xp will default to its on Music player. if you have a decent CRWRITER, there are CDplayers for $40 or so.
