cd not recognised in d drive

OS: xp pro
CPU/Ram: 1.2g./256m.
Comment:

Neither Media Player nor Nero recognises that there is a cd rom in the drive.I have made sure that the one in there is a good one and a clean one.Nothing will,therefore,burn.
Is it software,drivers or simply a cleaning
issue?
If you can,please help.Thank you.

So if you put a music cd in and press the >> on the front of the drive what happens?
OK in device manager?

Cleaning is rarely required and more often damages the cdrom than fixes it. I would not advise that path. Blow out with canned air if you are concerned about dust buildup.

Is it simply that autorun is disabled.
Right click on the drive and select autorun, what happens?
