Comment:

For some reason my DVD and CD writer are not being shown on my 'My Computer' window in XP. I've tried refreshing and rebooting, but they still don't show up. I went to the device manager and saw they were both there with yellow exclamation marks next to them. Upon double clicking on one I get the message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I uninstalled it and then scanned for hardware changes and it gets recognised fine, but when I try and reinstall it says

A problem occured during installation. Your device may not work properly

What to do?

Thanks in advance. Paul.

Get inside your case (unless it's going to void any warranties), and check that all cables are pushed firmly into their respective sockets. Sounds like loose cable to me.

Thanks mate.

I'll have a look in a little while, though the 'damaged registration' bit sounds nasty.

By the way, i've just found out this problem first appeared after my wife (women and computers, eh?) tried to run a Macintosh CD on the drives. Surely this can't have been the cause of this?

Paul,

A few weeks ago I lost both of my cdrom drives in my windows explorer. I found this registry fix that solved the problem. Remember to backup your registry first!

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I'm assuming you know how to edit your registry.

Ok, so maybe my women and computers comment was a little rash. ;)

How is it done Sully?

go to start menu...run... then type regedit and click ok.

To backup your registry...file..export...save it to your hard drive somewhere. If you have problems you can reverse it usinf file import... then browse to your backup that you created.

After you backup... just navigate to the registry key that I posted earlier as you would in explorer. Once you've gotten there... highlight the folder with the long number and you'll see "values in the window at the right. delete any that say "upperfilters" or "lowerfilters". You will see subfolders. don't mess with them.

I don't think you need to reboot... just reopen explorer.

Hmmmmmm, after reading the problem Solarian was having [The unforgettable uninstall] and reading this, I grabbed a disk to backup my registry file... Things were going great, but I got an error message: "Cannot export A:\Regiedit Backup.reg: Error writing the file. There may be a disk or file system error." I've tried 4 disks now and all with the same error!

Now I KNOW there's nothing wrong with my disks. I just finished going through EVERY one of them [scanning, reformating, checking for errors] and threw out the bad ones [I used to keep them for little things like saved games disks, but they're so cheap, I don't bother anymore].

What on earth could be causing this? Does this mean I have a problem in my registry now? [Solarian... QUIT LAUGHING!!]

To lighten things up, I HAVE to tell you this: Am working on my puter [I know, DUH!] and my littlest one, who's 2, came over and was trying to play with the CPU. I grabbed his hand and told him VERY sternly if he touched it I would spank him [he was going for the power button]. I asked him if he understood, he backed up a step and looked at me with a little grin on his little face and says, "My bad!" and runs off. lmao I've almost got tears in my eyes... lol

To quote Paul: "(women and computers, eh?)" and: "Ok, so maybe my women and computers comment was a little rash. ;)"

At MY house I'M the one who fixes everything that goes wrong with our computers after my husbands breaks something [MEN and computers, eh?]. I'm ALSO the one who programs the VCR'S, sets alarm clocks, fixes leaky spigots and the washing machine, redoes the floor in the back porch... etc. I'm not saying my husband is inept, he just takes too long to do things so I learned how to do it myself [5 ppl in the house, and I'm not waiting 2 days, let alone 2 MONTHS for him to 'get around' to fixing the washing machine!!]

You think women are problems? lol Well, how bout I challenge you to a bikini wax off to show you what we are willing to go through to please our men who don't appreciate us??? Or pregnancy? Are YOU willing to go through nine months of a whole new person growing inside of you? Put up with the cravings? Weight gain? Cramps? The kicking and the elbowing? The 15 to 36 HOURS OF LABOUR? Or how about something that's 10 to 12 TIMES BIGGER than where it's coming out of? [Try opening an umbrella up your butt... that'll give you an idea.]

Men... always complaining about the petty things... lol

Teesa,

RU trying to backup directly to a floppy?

My registry backup is about 50Mb (wont fit on a floppy)

I just tried backing up to a floppy and got the same error message you got.

Try saving your backup to a folder on your hard drive... then burn it to a cd.

Got scared, did you?

BTW...nice web site...your kids are beautiful!

Sully, yes I did try to back up onto a floppy. Thought if it was that important, I didn't want to save on my puter in case something happened.

But if it's really that big, then why wouldn't I get a 'Insufficiant disk space: Please insert new disk' kind of thing?

Not scared, mad actually... lol been running all these tests and scans on my puter looking for probs and always coming up clean. When something doesn't work, I get p*ssed... lol And, unfortunatly for me sometimes, I don't get mad... I get even... and THAT just opens up a whole NEW can of worms!! lmao

And thanks for the compliment on my children... I hope they're cute... I didn't work on building them from scratch for nine months for nothing!! hehehe [sowwy, I can NEVER just stop at the 'thank you' part... lol]

Another thing about women is that they always 'go off on one' as we say in the UK. Does your husband just nod and agree when you talk to him about things Tessa? ;)

No but seriously, you sound like a real practical lady. The whole thing with us guys though is that we have to do things logically, progressively and hence properly. This may cause us to take a little longer to get things done (due to beer breaks and the like) but you cannot deny that we are very good at fixing things like fences etc.

And the whole baby thing is so ovverated. A chance to lounge about doing nothing for 9 months carrying a huge stomach. We do that all our lives!!!! ;)

All your lives? Well, when you pee out a bowling ball, let me know. lmao

As for the logical et all. I'm a Virgo... I AM the logical one in this family.

And when I want something done, and done right, I do it meself.

I take it the bikini wax off is a no go? lol

Thanks for the laughs, you're a lot of fun!

Excellent knowledge of computer, sully. Had same problem w/ my cd-rw/dvd-rom drive, tried your solution, and works great. Thanks for posting on a public forum and saving me from having to send computer to the damn manufacturer (they'd never give it back).

I encountered the same problem with my CD-ROM and DVD drives. Just wanted to add that the registry edit worked (thank you SullyD!), but I did have to go through the uninstall/reinstall/reboot process again.

Ironically the problem occured when I inserted my A+ Certification study guide CD. ::chuckle::
