Hi Guys / Girls,

My parents have a compaq (horrible computer) however, its not mine and my mum has asked me if i could fix their DVD and DVD RW+ drives before poppa bear finds out and kills me! (although im back to uni today anyway,i'd still like to come home being welcomed)

Firstly, when i start the pc with a cd in the drive it will have a blank screen however as soon as i take the cd out of the drive hey presto it loads.

Secondly, when i place a cd in either drive it wont read it and will prompt me to put a cd into the drive.

I have checked the cables, and have not messed with any of the hardware.

If anyone has any ideas, please get back to me asap. With many thanks

Keep up the good work

Aaron

Greetings:
It's usually not good news when this happens. Most times it's a fault with the drive (the laser unit). Try booting to a bootable disc (like the Windows CD). Make sure "boot from DVD-RW+ is enabled in the BIOS. If it won't do this, then it really has to be the drive at fault. also Sometimes if you are using a low quality DVD -RW+ CD you will have the same issues
Bon Courage...

You may use the following steps to troubleshoot:

1. Open BIOS Setup and see if your CD Devices are listed there. If you don't see your CD devices in BIOS Setup you need to consider hardware problems-anything from disconnected, loose or badly connected cables, or damaged cables (Signal cable/Power cable)to damaged Drives. If you see your CD devices listed with their brand names in the appropriate Menu or submenu in the BIOS Setup screen, proceed to step #2 for software troubleshoot.

2. Double click My Computer and see if your CD devices are listed.

3. Right click My Computer>Hardware> Device Manager > +DVD/CD-ROM drives

See if there are any Error symbols like ? ! or X by the side of the device name.

Depending up on the findings you might have to perform Uninstall & Reinstall of devices or Registry Editing.

If you post the results of above troubleshoot someone can guide you from there with steps to edit the registry deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters.
