i installed the cd drive, and windows xp tells me that the driver is corrupt or missing.
how can windows xp not detect a simple cd-rom drive?
this drive is new, and windows xp is not detecting it!

I was lucky when this happened to me it was a bad cable. Have you checked to see if there is a firmware update for the CDROM? Have you played around in the device manager to see if you can get the drivers to upgrade? If you just have single drives, have you tried using it as a slave to the hard drive on ide slot one to check out the drive?

jumpers, cables, even different channels! nothing: same problem.
maybe i should reinstall windows xp?
it was just formatted and restored 5 months ago, and the computer is not heavily used!

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm>You could check this URL.I found many cases where Dell had problems with the firmware on different cd-rom dvd-rom ect...doing google searches. You may just have a bad cd-rom,Are you able to try it in another computer?Hopefully not a Dell.

Dell always recommends to use the factory installed 40 pin IDE cable. And they also configure everything to be jumpered to Cable Select.
Not sure if that might contribute to your difficulty, but worth mentioning...
Good luck.

i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ide channel through windows, and now it works!
have no clue as to why it failed in the first place.
i was gonna recommend xandros or linspire for them (as they've been using windows for a long time, they are almost computer illiterate, and linspire is simple), but they are die hard windows fans, and won't buge. oh well :P
