I recenly bought a new computer that has XPpro. As well I have put XPpro on my other old computers. The cd/cdr/cdrw/dvd whatever drive works fine until I put in certain music cds and computer program cds--these cds are not dirty and they worked fine in 98--the cd drive icon will disappear after trying to read these cds but will reappear after I reboot the computer. I get the same problem while "copying" music cds that are "dirty"-the copying process gives an error and the cd icon in my computer disapears until re-boot. It does this on all my computers with XPpro. umm Help?

yo Dan ...
Me got the same problem ... The CD Drive has poor error correction capabilities or something is wrong with the alignment. Windows XP can't handle it and promptly decides to wipe out the CD from it's memory.
Definitely a problem ... You can try getting a new CDDRIVE ... or be prepared to reboot after every Dirty CD. Win98 is not so smart so it will go on trying to read the CD's and then the comp gets hung.

yep same thing here, my problemo appears to be completely random, everything is going fine and then all of a sardine,it hangs up, the cd drive gives a message "please insert disk" when there is one in already. the eject function also becomes null and void. but when i reboot, it comes back to life. the dell techies tell me to reformat the hdd.
