Hello all,

I recently formatted my computer and got everything back up and running properly EXCEPT the CD and DVD burners. Please note that they WORK perfectly before the format.

Both of my Liteon CD-RW and Liteon DVD-RW drives cannot burn anything at all! However, they can read and copy data (from drives) properly, but just wouldn't record anything.

I've tried using Alcohol 120% and Nero, but none of them works. Even the standard window burning does not work.

The burning process always end up failing at the start when it starts copying data. The drives (and I mean BOTH DRIVES) start "spinning" the CD, then stops, then get ejected out. Both softwares just noted the burning has failed with no specific error messages.

Here is what I have tried so far,

1) Used the ForceASP program and backup, reinstall the ASPI layer files.
2) Started the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service via the "Component Services" section. I found this from one of the Microsoft Knowledge base saying Window 2003 64 bit OS does not automatically start this service. Althought I am only using WinXP Pro SP 1. But still, starting this particular service does not solve anything. Also have tried set the properties to "automatic", but it doesn't seem to start itself automatically and even a manual start would not solve the problem
- Tried "The "Remove CD Burning features" is already in "Not Configured" and "Enabled CD Recording on this drive" for both drives are already checked." at Group Policy. (gpedit.msc in run). Not working still.
- Visited http://www.theeldergeek.com/cd_burning.htm, added new registry keys in both locations. (NoCDBurning keys do not exist beforehand) Reboot but still does not work.

Other notes:

- Drivers for BOTH DVD-RW and CD-RW drivers are default from WinXP Installation CD.
- The chipset drivers for the motherboard, EPOX 8RDA+ are also installed correctly.
- The Blank CDs I am using shouldn't be the problem, I recently used them a few days ago (before format), and I have been testing using random samples from the bundle.
- I am trying to burn ISO via Alcohol 120%, burn MP3s-to-wav via NERO and
even tried burning normal data file via standard window burning program.
- I heard about checking the DMA mode, but I can't find them from the drives' properties.

Can anyone please please help me with this problem??? I've tried everything I could think of, and I don't want to format my computer and try again. Thanks a ton!

sounds like somethings wrong with the ASPI files. Its probably since you used ForceASPI.
The cds that came with your drives should be enough to get them working right.

There are 10 types of people in the world, those who know binary, and those who don't.

I know this sounds goofy, but i have had this problem before. it may not be the same solution... I found out my DVD-RW wouldnt burn because its region wasnt set, try setting it through the propertie. its what fixed my problem like that. maybe it might be interfering with the other burner as well? =/

Well, the burners didn't work before I used the ForceASPI anyway. After installing them, nothing changed. Do note the burners work fine BEFORE the format / fresh install of WinXp Pro.

I checked the region for the DVD-RW and the region is set correctly, so I don't know what is wrong with it...

Why did you format in the 1st place? The fact that you did so tells me that you were probably having some sort of major problem, didn't know how to fix it, so decided to start from scratch.

What ASPI driver version did you install? Some folks are having issues with the latest Adaptec version. Read the article on the home page of the site I am referencing below. You may need to go back to version 4.60. http://radified.com/index2.html

Jam:

I first formatted the computer around 2 weeks ago. Decided to scan the computer for spyware/adwares, removed them with SpyKiller, reboot machine and Windows no longer restart itself. Can't even go to safe mode at all. So I might as well kill everything and do a fresh install. (not reinstall)

OtherHill:

The version of the installed ASPI Layer is actually 4.60 right now. (date 9/10/99) I can't find where to download the latest version anyway. All the links from your link seem to point to the 4.60 version. (even though the zip/rar file is named as forceaspi17)

You can get the latest version from the adaptec site. 4.71.2 http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/common/searchresults.html?language=English+US&support=support&queryText=ASPI+drivers&submit=Search
