catastrophic failure

I am trying to install Battlefield 1942, but have encountered a problem. I received a message telling me 'An installation support file could not be installed. Catastrophic failure' when I pressed setup in the cd provided. I then scoured the net and believed, to my stupidity, that deleting a registry root key was the answer. Now I have a similar message appearing, but instead of saying catastrophic error it says 'Class not registered'. Other programs can now not be loaded either. Please, please can someone help me rectify my deletion error and my catastrophic failure message?

After deleting the registry file, it's time for a total reinstall of the OS.

Not to preach, but never never change the registry without backing it up first. It's just a good safety net for the kind of thing you're experiencing.

mhall812, Can you get to System Restore? Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. If you can go back to the closest date prior to when the problem started and do a System Restore.
