Does anyone know how I can get the old Windows 3.1 Cardfile.exe program to run in Windows XP? I get an error that reads:
16-bit windows subsystem
"the ntvdm cpu has encountered an illegal instruction"
I got the file from a Windows 3.1 installation disk and can't get it to work on XP. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi Matt

That 16 bit Windows subsystem error usually means a corruption with config.nt or autoexec.nt or command.com

But it might also be that the Cardfile program has put XP into a spin, and it doesn't what to do...and just chose that error message at random !

Did you try the Compatibilty mode for Cardfile ?

Locate the file cardfile.exe
Right click and choose Properties
Click the Compatibility tab
Choose to run in Windows 95 compatibility

It might work !

Failing that, you could try to replace your command.com file

Instructions here on what to do...

Good luck

Hi Matt,

I have not tried it on w2k, but that error would seem to indicate that it won't play nice with the other kids.

Might be the course of least resistance to use a 3rd party programme to handle the old cardfile files.

Here's a free one but I'm sure there are others out there:
