Comment:

I have repeatedly tried to write different types of files to my floppy (A:) drive, but cannot. The message I always get is this:

Error copying file or folder - Cannot copy <filename>: The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.

I have used several different disks and verified they are not write-protected. My system is a Dell Dimension 2350 running XP Home Edition.

Any help that can be provided would be appreciated. If you need further information, I'll be happy to provide it so you can help me.

Try formatting a disk and see what happens. Will it read a floppy? my first guess is that the drive has gone bad. The mechanism that senses write protection may be stuck in that position.

I would say that FJB is correct, just a couple of questions:
1) Can you see drive A: from explorer
2) Can you read a floppy with data on from explorer
3) Can you do the same (point 2) from a DOS window.
If not, I think you should consider to replace your floppy drive.

Well, before you replace it, check all the harware connections. See if both the power and data cables are properly connected between the floppy drive and the motherboard.

Also, there might be a setting in the BIOS to enable/disable the floppy. Check that.

These are items which Luciano and FJB would have mentioned given an appropriate response from you.

Considering the error message it suggests that both the power and data cables are connected but it can't write to the floppy as noted by Luciano and FJB.

Maybe even just blow into the floppy's doorway in hopes of dislodging a dust ball stuck in the wrong spot and then perhaps use a vacuum to suck out that ball of dust.

If still no joy then replace the drive.
