Cant view inseted objects in word

When I open a word document usinf my Office XP which I know has a picture or object inserted into it I can't see the picture or object. However when I go to print preview I can see the whole document including the object or picture. Opening the same file on a different PC I can see the picure or object no problem. I have been through all the settings that I cna find but have not fixed the problem.
