can't upgrade IE6 to IE8

August 6, 2011 at 16:52:18
Specs: WinXP home and Ubunt

I have a HP PC purchasd in 2001. The system just crashed. I was able to recoverby using the eight CDs that came with the PC originally. I had problems finding Service pack 2, but realized that 1a would work, I was able to find Service Pack 3 as an ISO file and burnt it to a CD and was able to load it. When I checked the "My Computer" ion I found that the system was updated and had Service Pack 3 installed. Next I install Win Media Player 11 without a problem. Now the problem, the sysem still has IE6 I can''t upgrade it. I have tried downloading both IE 7 and 8 from sights on the web, Microsoft is no help, each time I try running either 7 or 8 I get an error screen telling me other programs are open and Explorer can't load.
Any ideas? I do have a retail copy of XP with service packs 2 as part of the CD.
Is it possible to copy IE 7 from the retail copy of windows and then upgrade it to IE8?
I really don't want to get rid of an old "war horse" of an operating system if I have to.
My Linux system has some limitations.
So, any ideas.
Thanks

Lets isolate the problem & see if it only affects IE..

Install another browser.

Mozilla Firefox

Portable Firefox

I currently have Firefox on this PC and it works fine. It appears that the IE7 or 8 download starts out normal enough, but when it tells you it's going to look for updates before loading either Explore program it gives an error message and tell me that I need to restart the PC to close open programs, there are no open programs that I can see. Using the current IE6 version results in an error message from my cable company telling me I have an out dated explorer program.
Firefox works great. It looks like the problem is related to the Microsoft server no longer handling Win XP.
What do you think?
Thanks

Try repairing IE6, reboot & then the reinstall.

Download IE7 or IE8 as a separate program to your desktop.

Greetings to All.
Forgive the delay in getting back with the results of my problem.............
But in the end it was nessecary to move my files and documents to a seperate
hard drive for back up and then dump the entire hard drive, re-formate it and install all eight orignial restration CD's that came with the PC. After this I was now presented with another problwm of installng all the updates and service packages,
as well as the programs for anti virus and security. After three days of looking on the net, I was able to find a copy of servcie pack 1a which would work as a replacement for service pack 2 and I secured a copy of servcie pack 3 as iso file and placed it on a CD. With this I had a functioning operating system.
In the end......if all else fails return to the begining.
Thank you for your attention and your answer.
Chuck
