Can't update or Install ServicePack

Hi, all have a problem and hope sone one can help me. its been about 2 years ago i had a computer built and it come with XP Pro already installed on it. worked well for a long time then i started having problems.so i did format it was ok then i wanted to use the update to keep it running good. so i went to Microsoft and started to update it no go. it said the product code wasn't valid. to top it all the man who built it has gone out of buisness. he gave me a product key it installed it but it want let me Update. is there some way i can get a valid key. i looked at microsoft and they want $140.0 for a new key.i can't afford that. would appreciate any advice i can get Thanks Tommy

you can get your updates here untill you get it resolved. xp home oem version is usually the best choice .for an issue like yours. format and do a clean install. xp home oem $89.99
