Dear group:

I had a virus attack which apparently corrupted my Anonymizer program and it no longer worked. I ran AVG and Trend Micro HouseCall online virus scan and the virus problem was solved.

I went to the add/remove control panel to remove Anonymizer so I could install a fresh copy and when I clicked on the remove button nothing happened.

I then tried to use system restore but there was not a restore point far enough back to restore Anonymizer.

I also tried to remove Anonymizer in safe mode and that did not work either.

I can't install a fresh copy of Anonymizer because when I put in the disc and try to install a fresh copy I get an error message that says "a copy of Anonymizer is already installed. Remove this copy then install the new copy."

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help!

kerry

when you run the anonymizer disc, does it give you the
remove/modified option to remove the program?

navigate to C:/program files and look for the folder. open the folder and any internal folders and remove all files working your way back out. When the folder is empty then delete the folder itself.

Now reinstall the program and see if it installs.

Hey klnaj:
No uninstall option on the install CD.

Hey lurkswithin:
I already deleted the Anonymizer folder before I tried to reinstall the program.

What else can I try?

Thanks,

kerry

Your best bet is to run a registry cleaner. Simplest and intuitive one is tuneup utilities. You can download and run the trial version for free. There are two sections in it that may help. First is registery cleaner and the second is the program uninstaller.

You have to open the program and select the program you are trying to install and remove it.

Hi kwlakey and "ALL"

try this goto "start" > "Run" type:
REGEDIT [press ok] +

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

... look for folder relating to "Anonymizer"
and click it. (Delete this LATER)
... in right window goto the path(s) relating to the "apps" and delete them
(thats the applications in windows)
... right click the "folder" in the "Reg" DELETE that folder NOW!
... Reboot reinstall ... might work NOW

Hey mavis007:

I followed the above proceedure. I went to the add/remove control panel and Anonymizer is no longer in the list. But when I try to install the program I still get the message indicating that another copy is on the computer. Is there something else in the registry that could be causing this?

Thanks,

kerry

try regedit again:

when it opens goto "edit" find and type in related filename ie "Anonymizer" or an associated webpage ... use F3 key to find "next" entry.

... sorry it did'nt work first time!

... Also look@ "ini" + "inf" file(s)
for paths logged in the reg etc to do with Anonymizer program is it on CD?

Hey mavis007:

I used regedit to remove every instance of 'anonymizer' and when I try to install anonymizer it still says a previous copy is installed.

What can I do?

Thanks,

kerry

... something is telling it not to.

try goto :
C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\temp

... and delete the contents of the temp folder.

... you'll first have to see hidden files n folders.
... open any window (NOT IExplorer)goto
"tools" > "folder options" > "View" tick "show hidden files n folders".

............. worth a try

Hey per and hey mavis007:

I used regseeker and regscanner to remove all instances of intries associated with the word "anonymizer" and I am still having the same problem when I try to install Anonymizer. I still get the same message that indicates that a previous version is on the computer and this causes the installation to fail.

I don't have any restore points to use either.

I am still stuck.

Any fresh ideas please?

Thanks,

kerry

Hey mavis007:

The format idea is a problem. First it would take weeks to back up everything I have and second I dont have my orginal WinXP install disk and third I cant afford to buy another copy right now.

Also, how can EAZ-FIX restore my computer to a previous date? Is that what it does?

Also where does it find the restore files? I am confused because system restore had no restore points several days ago when this problem happened.

Thanks a bunch for any more ideas!

kerry

EAZ-FIX is an install first before you have problem software.

... then you can tell it to take snapshots or you take snaps.
... then you can revert backwards/forwards
to the dated snapshot anytime to a clean pc.

"...drive backup images for bare metal recovery..."

... I hav'nt seen anything like it before.

... it wo'nt get you outa your problem right
now as you never had it installed before you
had the problem.

Hey mavis007:

I greatly appreciate you following up and helping me. You are right, "always think ahead." But I had my restore point setting at 12% which should have been enough for me to go back a few days when the problem started. But when I checked there were no restore points.

Here is what I have done so far.

1) Searched for all files and folders (including hidden) using the Windows search feature and searched for all instances of "anonymizer". Then deleted them all.

2) Used Regseeker to do the same.

3) Used regscanner to do the same.

And I am still getting the message that a previous copy is on the computer.

Is there something I am missing?

Anonymizer.com will not answer emails. And I have tried the tech support number and they never answer.

If you can think of anything that might help then please share it with me.

Thanks,

kerry
