Hi, I use AVG Free as my firewall/virus checker, but 2 days in a row my system scan ahs picked a trojan. I've got rid of it, but I want to switch off System Restore to get rid of any old checkpoints. However, when I try to do it, I get an error saying "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives (I have 3 partions on my hard drive). Please restart your machine and try again" I have restarted my machine, but I still get the same error.
Can anyone help ?
Regards,
Gary
Hi, Just noticed that I also can't access Windows Firewall. This is the error I get when I try to access it through Control Panel/Security "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings"

Whats the name of the virus? can you disable the system restore from safe mode (i'm not sure if you can or not)? goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com
and do a full virus scan.
Run the system file checker.
To run the system file checker, press Start, Run, and then type in SFC followed by its options.
The most common usage of SFC is this:
SFC /scannow
This causes SFC to scan your system immediately. SFC can take a few minutes to run. Have your installation CD or equivalent available in case SFC needs to replace a damaged file.
Hi Stryker, THnaks for your help. The virus is called binst.exe. It's in Windows/Spool32, and every time I restart my computer, anothe rone pops up. I seem to recall downloading a program from the net, and my AVG Free seemed to uninstall, which must be how I got the virus. I re-installed, but can't seem to get rid of this file. I assume my System Restore problems are connected to
this.What do you think ?

Gary
you need to clean the virus first. then follow the above instructions. you should be using something other then avg...you get what you pay for...and since you paid nothing for avg thats what you get. But dont take my word for it that avg is not that great...do some searches for Anti Virus reviews on google and you'll see for yourself. Trendmicro is #1 at catching most virus. Visit the above link and do a scan and let me know what it comes up with.
p.s. plus avg puts an ad in every outgoing e-mail so all the people that get your e-mails get an ad to get AVG. Me personally, i dont like that, but maybe you wont mind.
Hi Stryker, I followed your advice, and deleted the file. I then went to the Trend site, and started the scan. However, halfway through, my computer restarted itself for no reason. I'm now tryhing the scan again. I'll let you know what happens.

Gary
Hi Stryker, Re=started the Trend virus checker, and it found 2 viruses. However, it cou;d only delete one of them. The one it couldn't delete was a Windows Installer file. So, I've decided to format the disk.

Gary
