Can't sync Palm505 with laptop

I have an old Palm505 that I want to sync with newer laptop. I installed the Palm and set up the Manager to allow the handheld to override the desktop (laptop in this case), and I can't sync. I get the error message that the connection isn't right. I've tried three different cradles and 3 different ports (USB plug-ins) and don't know what else to do. I don't want to lose the content on my old Palm505. Please advise.
