I have XP home edition and everything was working great until I tried to upgrade an installed game. My comp. froze and when I tried to re-start, this messsage appeared:" windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system" I'm then prompted to restart with the XP CD-Rom to "repair" the problem. Now the problem: I don't know what to do after I select "r" to repair the problem. What command prompt do I use to repair or replace that file? Luckily my roommates computer is now functioning so that I can post this question. Please help!!

I don't think the file is corrupt either, but I don't know how to repair or replace the file. I can get to the repair spot in the recovery console, I just don't know what command prompt to use to do the job (and I'm not bull****ing, I really would like to know how to fix this problem).

Go to www.teresaudio.com and get memtest86. It is a ery good memory diagnostic that will tell you if you are having problems with your ram. Do not rely on the memory test at start=up. It is superficial and misses a lot of errors.

Thanks for the input so far. Hopefully more people will read this message before it goes too far down the list and is ignored.
I'm going to take the advice I've recieved so far, regarding the RAM and memory test, but can anyone instruct me on what command prompt I should use(and how to use it)in the recovery console to add or repair the file: \windows\system32\config\system
If I can figure out how to do that, I think a lot of my problems will be solved.
Thanks for the support guys!! :-)

I just recovered from the same problem. Hopefully, it will be easier for you. Your registry is corrupt. It's alot different than the old kernel system, the registry is loaded as "hives (file groups)" and is stored in pieces within the system. Go to M$ pages and read how to restore registry. I won't go into it here it's pretty extensive but it's definitely the problem I had. After that use Erunt or some other "non-M$" registry tool for safety.
Good Luck
Dan
