I'm having the exact same problem, everyone has told me you had to reinstall windows completely so your hard drive would be cleaned. I have not done that yet because i want to save my files but I am unable to obtain a fix from Microsoft. Please, if anyone makes any progress on this, please inform ming and I, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ming, I dont think there is any real solution to your problem. I was not able to solve mine so I had to hook an extra hard drive to thecomputer to access my files on the bad hard drive and back them up. I'm going to then restore the hard drive by erasing everything, thats probably your best bet.

I had this problem and I installed a second copy of XP on the hard drive, but I didn't erase the old copy. I then copied the following files from \winnt\repair to \winnt\system32\config (where winnt is the directory of your initial disfunctioning windows install): SAM and Security. My computer started up with most of the programs still in tact but some of my aesthetic preferences changed. I think this could probably be done from the recovery console as well as long as you know where to look for the files, that would prevent you from having to install a second copy of the OS on the drive.
