No computer problems and shut down normal last night then today booted it up and get a black screen that says windows root- system 32-hal.dll please re-install a copy of the above file. Computer is about 6yrs. old. HP has the recovery partitioned on the hard drive but since I can't get to the desktop I don't know how else to access that. I am pretty sure I have the disks also they gasve me but have no clue how to fix this so need some help to get up and running again. Mary

Tried the first link at HP and when I click return to OS choices I don't get windows recovery console option I jus get windows XP home edition that I can click and that just goes back to same error. I do have a CD here from HP called recovery console besides the 8 recovery CD's but when I put it in it does nothing so don't know how to use it. Mary

Your computer may not be set to boot from the cd drive before the hard drive. Do you know how to get into the bios ? You repeatedly hit a key, such as delete or F1 when you first turn the computer on. There should be a menu you can access which allows you to boot from the cd drive before the hard drive. You will probably lose all your data if you run HP's recovery CD, so hopefully you have it backed up somewhere.

Ok, I figured out that f10 boots to the hp recovery console. I have most everything backed up as I am good about that but I have a few e-mail addreess I forgot to write down so if I don't have to do a recovery would rather not.

The 3rd link says it's as easy as this but I don't think I have a set up CD so how would I do these steps? Mary

Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
Delete the C:\Boot.ini file
Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
Run Fixboot

What exactly does the CD read? It's either a Recovery/Reinstallation CD, or it's a Windows XP OS Installation CD. The two are different.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

No I know for sure I don't have a real widows XP cd as it did not come with the computer. The CD is the same as I wouls use if I hit F10, the HP recocvery console is there and that's what the CD is as I got it to work but it either does a recocvery without or format or you can have it do a format and recovery. It's partitioned on the hard drive. This site says F8.

I know if I am on the dekstop I cab go to start run and type in something and it will repair files using the the recovery on drive F but I can't get to the desktop.

Have to leave and might be able to get back to this until tomorrow morning so will check back for suggestions when I can. Mary

How do I delete the boot.ini file? Remember I can't get to the desktop all I have is a black screen with the hal.dll error and I have no windows XP CD.

Like I stated I know if I was on the desktop I could go to start run and type in something and it would grab files from the partition that has the recovery on it and repair any damaged files but I don't know how to do that without being on the desktop. Mary

Install the hard drive from your system into another working system, copy the files that you want from that drive, reinstall it back into the other system and then run the HP Recovery CD.

Mary, as I mentioned in response 3, your computer may not be set to boot from the cd drive before the hard drive. In that case you probably wouldn't be able to boot from the recovery cd. Again, do you know how to get into the bios ? You repeatedly hit a key, such as delete or F1 when you first turn the computer on. There should be a menu you can access which allows you to boot from the cd drive before the hard drive.

Sorry I left you hanging. My son's laptop is about 8 months old with vista. Yesterday he got a message about a MS update and said yes to the download and install without telling me and it took like 2hrs. and when all was said and done and it got to the desktop said service pack could not install or something so now I have to see what happened. I am using it now and it seems fine but I may be over on the vista forums later.

I don't have another hard drive to hook it too and have no clue how to do that so I may take it somewhere and see if they can help me. Hubby said we can get a new one but it has to wait a bit. I would still like to get this one going and have it wireless in another room so my husband can use it for his school work and grades.

Had to go to a graduation party yesterday then got home to family out of state that was trying to call all afternoon asking if we were going to be home today as they were popping in and wanted to go to Niagara Falls so I had to go there all day and was not in the mood for it. Was hoping to hit a jackpot at the casino for a new computer but no such luck,, that's life. Mary
