Let me start by saying that my computer didn't start one day. It would get stuck in the config.system file, or something like that. So then I followed the procedures indicated in the Microsoft Support page, which summarizing said to use the recovery console, delete some files, copy some files from repair, then go to safe mode, search for the volume system info file, choose a restore point before the PC died, copy some files from system32 to a temp folder I created earlier, then reboot and get into the recovery console, delete the original copied files, reboot again, go to safe mode, click on system restore, pick the day, etc. And voila, I was going to be ok...
Well I did all that to the T. No deviations. But now I can access Safe Mode with no problem, I see all my files and folders and programs, but I cannot log in Windows normally. When I try to boot normally, I see it loading (the Windows loading screen, with the bar moving at the botton) and then it goes black (like it usually does before the desktop shows up), but that is it. The desktop does not show up, nor a welcome screen (which I never did because I do not have any additional accounts, just mine and no password). It basically just gets stuck. But I can access everything through Safe Mode... HELP!!!! How to I get to Windows normally???
Thanks a million!

Twice. It did restore but I can only start in safe mode. It will get stuck before getting to the desktop in normal windows.

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 Or SP2 cd you will have to d/l sp1 or sp2 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster.

I tried, but my PC shuts down right when the upgrade starts... It doesn't shut down if I select recovery console, or anything else, just when I select the upgrade part. I'm thinking on taking my HD to another PC and try to do the upgrade there, maybe I have a hardware problem too.
