I can't start any of my .exe files. My troubles started two days ago when I installed klik and play by clickteam. It locked up during installation so I had to force quit it. When I started up again it wouldn't do anything and all it showed was my background and my cursor. So I pulled up the task manager and in addition to my normal programs running I also had unwise.exe and two rundll.exe's running. So I closed unwise.exe and everything worked fine. This happened the next couple start up times and whenever I closed unwise.exe or one of the rundll's everthing would work fine except everything ran incredibly slow. I thought it was a virus so I downloaded Avast virus scanning. I scanned my drive and it said that unwise.exe was the trojan-gen {vb} virus. So I clicked delete and it was gone. Now I started up my computer again and I tried to open a .exe file and it said that it was missing. It said this for all .exe files. This was very disturbing so I checked for viruses again (using the rightclick scan option because I couldn't run the .exe). It came up with another file called trz2.tmp and said it was the same virus as the one above. I moved and renamed it hoping it would be fixed. It wasn't, the same .exe problem always came up and my comp was running slow as ever. So I wanted to try a virus program that was different to make sure I was on the right track so I got the correct viruses. So I downloaded avg's virus free version and it said that I had the getlog virus. I deleted it and it still didn't work. What is my problem? I can't install winxp again because I have a driver problem and my disk drive doesn't work. What should I do? Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew, Go to the link below and under the letter "E" scroll down till you find this.

EXE File Association Fix for Windows XP

This download restores the default File Association for EXE files. Download the REG file here and save it to your hard drive. Double click the file you just saved and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking the file and selecting Edit.

This should correct your problem.

Try posting in the security/virus forum.
Deleting the virus you find after the event will not undo the damage it has already done. My other recommendation is to get a working CD-ROM and wipe your HD and reinstal XP. You've restarted so many times since the initial infection it's likely your whole system is trashed anyway. The virus will be in your restore folder already so that option won't solve your problem. Your registry is probably screwed up and without a working CD-ROM you cannot even run repairconsole. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but protection beforehand is always better than the morning after pill.

Hey,
It is the backdooor anf virus. I have identified it now. Thanks Tefenuf for the file it worked. Ok, now I am removing the insidious registry entries that are messing it up. I have a question, if a registry key is referencing to the old unwise.exe file that was the virus should I delete it?

Andrew, I would be very carefull removing the registry key referring to the unwise.exe because you may have more than one unwise.exe file on your computer. Many programs have a unwise.exe file which is their uninstaller. I'd advise going to the link below and running the Free Housecall on-line virus scan to see if your system is clean of all viruses.

Make sure in the future that you have an Anti-virus Program and update the virus definitions weekly if not more often.

The name of the "backdooor anf virus" doesn't seem to be correct as I can't come up with anything doing a search. We need the exact name to be able to help more. Check the name again and post back with it.

Check the mcafee url. It tells about my virus. I removed the registry things it told me to but I still get the "cannot open cnfg" message when I start my computer so I fear that it is still there. Yeah, I downloaded avg virus scanner and my definitions are up to date now.

Andrew, Did you follow these instructions from this link?

It's possible that some of the virus files are in your System Restore folder so following the instructions from the link above may solve the problem. Don't forget to re-enable System Restore as it states at the bottom of the page.
