Have managed to write photos from digital camera onto CD (big deal, I know!) but how do I get them to play on my TV screen, or is this totally impossible? When I put the CD-R in the DVD player, as you do for music CDs, it just says "can't play". Hope I,m not being completely dense!

The main problem is that it sounds like you are putting the files onto a CD without the necessary support software. Most home DVD players will not look at CD's to provide video or pictures unless it is saved in a specific format. One way is to get a program to help you create a video file you need. One of them is Studio 9 from Pinnacle Systems. There are other packages available, but you will need one of these to finish the job.
Good luckRichard

Some DVD players (but not all) have the ability to read bmp and jpg files. If your DVD player doesn't have this ability, you will need a program to make the CD into a VCD/SVCD format. here are some program I recommend
1. Irfanview. It's free and will do simple slideshows and is easy to create a VCD slideshow with this software.
2. PicturesToExe. This program is mostly made for creating stand-alone slideshow on your computer but has a great option to create a slideshow in VCD format. This program will also let you sync music with your slides.
3. Proshow Gold. A great program for creating many different multimedia presentations including VCD slideshows. It is more complex the PicturesToExe but has many more features.
