I was attempting to burn an .avi file onto one of my CD-R disks. I can burn data videos onto the disks no problem (.bin .cue files) but when I tried to burn an .avi file, it wouldn't play in my DVD player.
I use a program called Nero StartSmart to burn my disks. I went into the option titled "Make Video CD". It gives you a menu option to select your files from, I burn the .avi file, it says "Burning completed successfully", I play it on a DVD player and the menu comes up with my file shown on it, but it wont play... No matter what I press on the controller, nothing happens. It's just an image of a menu it seems...
Anyone know how to burn an .avi file to disk? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Your dvd player needs mpeg format not avi. Try googling for 'avi to dvd' & you will get lots of info.

Johnr, he is using the option in Nero to make a VCD, when you do that it automaticly transcodes the AVI into the proper mpeg1 format for VCD or mpeg2 format for SVCD (if the proper codec is installed for that avi type).
Greensky, does the avi play on your computer? You may need to install the proper codec before Nero can transcode the avi file.

Some DVD 'players' for some reason just won't play home made DVDs, or will play DVDs made by one program and not another.

Yes, the avi plays on my computer. But not when I burn it to my CD-R disk. I seriously doubt it's a codec problem.

Kurt, same deal goes for VCD,SVCD or DVDs from my experience. Some of them require the precision of stamped media.

You need NeroVision Express available at the Nero website. This will convert your .avi files to .vob files playable on your DVD player. I recommend VDV-R because most older players will recognise them (if you have an older player that is.)
Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did finally get them working, but me being the idiot I usually am, I failed to even recognise that my CD's were not rewritable, so the ones I was using didn't have enough space to burn my video file onto. I had to use new disks.
