zeeradster, How did you remove those icons including the Recycle Bin? Have you gone into Control Panel>Display Properties>Desktop tab and tried to choose a Background?

i removed icons/shortcuts on the screen by deleting them by pressing delete key after selecting them.
to remove recycle bin icon i deleted the enrty in the registry.

I did try to set background like u said as well but even that was not helping...all i would see was the background color...when i refreshed by pressing F5 i would see my wallpaper flash once before the background color took over.

The problem seems to have solved itself now i can see my wallpaper normally...

You could have removed all the desktop icons by simply right clicking on a empty spot on your desktop go to the first option "Arrange Icons By" and then remove the check mark from the "Show Desktop Icons" this would have left you the option of having the desktop icons show again if you ever wanted them to by reversing the steps ! I did this and installed a small program called "Slider Dock" this app allows you to pick a group of icons that you want to use and the are put in a ring that you can scroll thru till you get to the icon you want ,then you double click on it to open shortcut . Its a pretty cool interface, here is a link if you are interested ,and its freeware !
Good Luck Nick
