can't see network printers in xp

I have a problem on one computer running windows xp. I can't install a network printer.
I can see the print server, but not the printer. If I enter the path manually I get an error message "can't connect to the network printer..."
I've done that ten times before on other machines running the same version of windows XP and with no problems. It used to work on this one too. Today I've reinstalled the computer and transfered files and settings using the transfer wizard. The problem remained.
