I can't see avi videos at all anymore. Used to be able to. Now I can't. Can someone lead me to a fix?

Try going into Safe Mode and unistalling the video driver. Reboot the system and let Windows detect it again and re-install it.

Can you describe the problem a little more...such as, is the computer crashing? what software are you using? Are you sure that the file isn't corrupt? are you sure that it is an avi file? (if it isn't download the codec for it)...is there just sound and no video or you can see or hear?

i'm having same prob. it seems that xp media plyr
thinks that my .avi files are songs.
(although xp id's them as video clips)

when you go to play them it just displays a blank
screen and a "track time"

xp also freezes when playing mpeg video

very frustrating.

my sys is:
athlon 1.1
geforce II mx
30 GB/hd
394 DDR ram
asus a7m266 mobo

it depends on the .avi files coding, some divx movies were made with some codecs that is unable to be viewed by media player, try play it with ThePlaya instead from www.divx.com

That is because AVI files are set to default to Play instead of Open.
In Explorer...
Tools
Folder Options
File Types
Find AVI (Video Clip) and select
Click Advanced
Select Open
Click Set Default

Now the clip will play instead of just loading.
Strange MS made it misleading...
According to them...
Open means play the file AND
Playy means load the file

Should have been the other way around!
