I have a fresh install of XP Pro on my computer. It seemed to be working fine once I got all of my Toshiba drivers loaded. I have been running most of the week flawlessly over my Wireless network. However, yesterday I started getting sever lag in opening yahoo, then random pages with search engines started failing, including Yahoo itself. Then it progressed to where no page would open. I figured this to be a DNS problem. I was right. Some how my computer AUTOMATICALLY set a permanent ip on both DNS servers on both my wireless and LAN cards. I had originally set both of these to obtain automatically. Odd I thought, so I reset it to automatic update. Things worked right for about 2 hours. I was searching all the pages that previously wouldn't work, including yahoo. Then, suddenly yahoo wouldn't search, it would just time out that it couldn't find the page. MSN wouldn't open, it would just time out. Google will not open. However, I can go to the IP of google, and search as normal. Weird, eh? Also, I couldn't ping google.com. But, I could ping yahoo.com. Now, as I'm writing this, I can actually ping google.com, but it loops back extremely fast at 41ms. But, I still can't open www.google.com.

I have done the following trouble shooting:
Deleted all cookies, history, and internet cache including offline content.
I've read information about the host file in Windows, and there is nothing there beyond original info.
I've run the most recent version of AdAware which removed 1 registry value and 6 files that were all trackers.
I've run Norton Anti-virus with the most recent update and have found no virus.

I am at a loss! This computer has bare minimum's loaded on, and I can't think of any reason it would have started doing this. My other computer (installed at the same time) is working fine.

One other thing that happens, when I boot up, it will come into Windows, seemingly done loading. Then after about 20 seconds, the screen will black out and back on. Up until the point it does that little black out, I am unable to browse the web at all or ping any sites. In fact, if I open the Start/Network Connections tab, it will leave an imbedded image of that on the desktop when it blacks out and on.

ANY HELP?

Machine specs are Toshiba Satellite 5205-s703. Came original with XP Home; I upgraded to Pro and everything has gone down hill. I had to format and start over. Don't want to do it again. I have downloaded all Toshiba software for this model computer and this version of XP.

There was an earlier post complaining of a similar prob to yours (or was this u ?!?!?)

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/79718.html

Anyways, seems u need to to visit the symantec link for more info and run hijackthis to fix the 017 entries.

Hopefully someone with more experience of interpreting hijackthis log files will give further advice.

GoodLuck

So far, the qhosts thing proved helpful, but not yet the answer. Not all of the registry entries where in my computer. I did find one directory that was related to a trojan file. However, my FRESHLY UPDATED virus scanner didn't find anything. SNAP! I ran a hijack this file as they suggested in one of the other articles. I will paste it in if anyone has any ideas.

David Edmonson,
You do have the Trojan.Qhosts:
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\VxD\MSCTP: Domain = mydomain.com

Merijn has released a new version of HijackThis that has been updated to detect all the Hosts files placed by Qhosts.

Download and run this version and post the log in a reply:

HijackThis!

Then again, just do this,
Delete the following files:
C:\Windows\Help\hosts
C:\Bdtmp
C:\Windows\0.reg
C:\Windows\2.reg
C:\Windows\0.vbs

Run HijackThis and fix the following entry:
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\VxD\MSCTP: Domain = mydomain.com
Reboot.

Why not just rename the hosts file(s) to oldhosts? I had the same problem and that's all I had to do to fix it.

BTW: No trojans on my machine!

I had this same set of problems. I have done alot of investigation and concluded that this looks like it may be an undiscovered variant of QHOST that may be targeted at google and sites that use google's search engine (like yahoo). I have tried to use Semantic's tool to remove QHOST but it does not find it or remove the many things that were done to my system. But many of the symtopms are there. If you do a trace route to google.com you can see that you are send to www.google.akadns.net. My DNS entries were also changed but when I fixed it and checked my host file, still have the same problem. I am still searching for something that will fix things since I still can't browse properly...

Not sure if it was qhost, but something has wreaked havoc on my computer. While I did seem to have qhost, I have removed everything pertaining, and have run numerous scans including symantec's qhost removal tool which states it's not found. Now. I'm still not able to access hotmail, ebay or mcafee. And am not able to post on several sites (hoping this will work here). While I am able to sign into MSN Passport, hotmail simply does not work. I can log into Amazon & search on Google no problem. Ebay worked briefly but no more. Also, I'm unable to send messages from OE (but this too seems to come and go). Are these repercussions from qhost? Or I'm just really lucky to have everything not work all at once? Help! Thanks!

Stefan.

I had this same problem last weekend. I could'nt even bring up google's homepage, much less search from the browser (Avant). Also could not search from Yahoo or MSN. Did an upgrade install of XP. Drastic, i know, but it worked. Afterwards, i found the patch for IE6 available from here.
