I'm not totally ignorant, but I'm definitely not a computer expert. The problem I'm having is when I click on Search, and enter the file name or parts I want to find, and select the C drive, all I get is a cute little doggy and a message: "Unable to connect. The web site is currently unavailable or the connection to the Internet has been lost." I'm not trying to search the Internet-I'm trying to search my own hard drive. Is there a setting I need to change? Please help.

Don't mean to impugn your intelligence, but where are you clicking on search?

Jimmy, If you're talking about Start/Search you must then click on "All Files or Folders" then down in the "Look In" window sellect your hard drive.

Thanks for that guys. What does impugn mean? Just kidding. Seriously though, here is what happens: I click on Search from the start menu. Then the doggy pops up with the question "What do you want to search for?" I select "all files and folders." In the next dialog box I choose the C drive from the "Look in" drop down box. No matter what I put in the other two boxes, labeled "all or part of the file name," and "a word or phrase in the file," I get the message about failing to connect to the internet. Appreciate any help.

If you use Windows Explorer Search whilst connected to the Internet, XP will download two XML files from Microsoft.com.

This is one of the means by which Microsoft monitors your usage of XP. You didn't know this? I guess MS forgot to mention it.

The second file appears to be missing from your system. Make sure that XP can use your hosts file to phone home to sa.microsoft.com for a new copy.
