Can't Save To External Hard Drive

March 12, 2005 at 20:52:20
Specs: Windows Xp Home Edition, 2ghz 512mb

I have a wierd problem that no one has ever heard of. I have a external 40gb hard drive that my windows xp computer can read but when i try to save a file to it, it copys the file, but if i unplug the drive and plug it back in the file is gone. I even tryed formatting the drive and it acts like it is formatting, completes the format and when i go to my computer and no files are on the drive, but if i unplug the drive and plug it back in they are still there. On any other computer, i can read and write files with no problem, one of them a 100mhz pentium. I even went to the extent of taking a hard drive out of another computer that reconized the drive put it in my computer and it did the same thing as the drive with windows xp did. It is a problem with the computer itself, but i don't know what it is. If i can't get it working i am getting rid of this computer because i bought this hard drive so i can save big 10gb files and take them to friends computers. Please Help?

To clarify your problem, you have a USB 40GB external HD that you are using on your WinXP computer. The external drive is not working properly in that is doesn't save files properly. Is this correct? What file system are you using on the desktop and on the external drive? You mentioned unplugging the drive. Do you mean that you simply unplug the USB cable from the port while the desktop is still running or do you use the icon in the system tray to safely disconnect the external drive before unplugging it. If you are unplugging it improperly then that may be your problem. How are you connecting the drive and when? Before you boot or after?

The file system for the xp computer is ntfs and the 98 system is fat32. And i remove it by selecting the icon also. When i copy a file on the xp computer it will copy, but when i plug the drive in later the file is gone. Even if i format the drive with files on it it will format but later when i plug the drive back in the files are back. What gives, i guess this computer is garbage. I guess my 100mhz win98 pc with usb 1.1 can use the hard drive but my brand new 2ghz with 512mb ram can't, sad how new technology is getting useless.

WinXP will not format a 40GB harddrive using FAT32. This is by design. If you want the External drive to be FAT32 you need to use Win98 to do it. If using fat32 file system there is a file size restriction. You can't store files larger than 4GB in size using FAT32.
