Hi guys,
Today, I uninstalled my internet explorer (version 6) cos it kept giving me pop ups (I prefer firefox). Then when i restarted my computer, most of my applications does not work and i cant reinstall the internet explorer. It has been giving me errors such as SHJWAPI.Dll and i cant run system restore, not even on safe mode..

my computer's OS is XP SP1, hope u guys can help me.

Edit: also if this helps, I used the method 2 in the following link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177

I thought you wrote that you uninstalled IE 6, not 7. The link you gave uninstalls IE 7 and restores IE 6. Also, why not upgrade to XP SP2. That might solve your problems and is a good idea anyway.

Those instructions are for IE7, you removed IE6. And why don't you have SP2 installed? I'm guessing you have a pirated copy of XP.

To fix your problem, install SP2. Or try here:

No, I don't have a pirated version of XP, i have the original version of XP home edition of which that came with the PC i bought. I know that uninstallation guide was for IE7, but i had IE6 and used the same method. Also thx guys, but I have already tried installing (like 5mins ago) SP2 (so i could install IE7), but the installation does not work. Please don't tell me i have to reformat my computer :(

Look at the link I supplied. There are several methods to repair IE6. You screwed up by trying to uninstall IE6 using the instructions for IE7.

You *may* be able to remove IE6 by using XPlite, but 1st you have to undo the damage you just did. IE6 will have to be repaired.

What happens when you try to install SP2?

Ok guys thx for the help. I managed to fix this problem :S, but putting the windows xp disc and repairing it. HOWEVER.. This creates another problem, now I have no sound whatsoever, the icon of the volume thing is missing and etc. I tried installing the driver but the message i receive after the failed installation is "driver not found! reboot your system, and run this setup again"

From where did you try to install the driver? If you're using the onboard sound, you might need to install the drivers for the motherboard, or is this a brand name computer ? You could also try updating the sound drivers from device manager. Also, have you now installed SP 2? At the very least, you will have to run all of the windows updates again after doing the repair install.

The sound card is integrated with the motherboard. I installed the driver from the CD that came with the motherboard, also i tried installing an updated version of which i downloaded. I am viewing the device manager and im getting an error, wait ill upload a screenshot of it. http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?...

You also need to install drivers for the "pci simple communications controller". That could be a modem or possibly a network card.

Did you try reinstalling the motherboard chipset drivers?

"I don't think so, what is that? would that fix the sound problem?" Maybe, maybe not, but you should certainly try reinstalling the motherboard chipset drivers, as jam suggested. You don't want any conflicts in device manager.

I assume you mean that the desktop icons don't bring up the program that they used to ? You should go to the .exe file for the program, right click, and then left click "send to destop-create shorcut."

For the desktop icons associated with programs, see if you can find the executable file for that program under program files. If that file won't open the program, then you'll have to reinstall the program. That shouldn’t happen, though when you do a repair install. Also, can you run any programs from the start menu ?

Its all the icons that are on the desktop, the programs' icons that r on the desktop run find if i open them from elsewhere. I also have some mp3 songs that i cant even click on the desktop, i can click it from the folder my music. Basically, i cant click anything on the desktop except right clicking and giving options such as refresh and properties, etc..

what i need 2 know is if u tried what i asked.does this happens only on your account? and have u scanned your computer for viruses.
from what i understand the icons are just sitting there and u can't access them.and that u can access them else where but not on your desktop.so the problem is with your desktop.
