Good day to all,
My friend's PC is getting an error message everytime she closes IE - " instruction at "xxxx" referenced memory at "xxxxx". The memory could not be "read".
I searched for a fix and one is doing a sfc scan from the run command. WinXp is not available so I tried to direct the system to look for the I386 folder in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Micro$oft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup). I double-clicked Sourcepath and changed it to C:\I386\. Is this right? When I run sfc scan, it's still looking for the winxp cd.
Is there another way of fixing this error?

Copy the i386 folder to c: drive root or wherever you want it.
Start regedit
Go toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
Double click the value SOURCEPATH in the right pane. and enter the location you copied the i386 folder.
In this case, C:\
Reboot and try SFC /SCANNOW. I have had an incidence that it didn't work and had to change it back to the cd drive letter.Stolen from Per...

"C:\I386\. Is this right?"
Only if you have put I386 on C:Click Start and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK. Note that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

If the Dllcache folder becomes damaged or unusable, as an administrator, you can check and repopulate the %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache folder.1. Use the Sfc /scanonce to scan all protected system files one time
2. Use sfc.exe to scan all protected system files and replace incorrect version with correct Microsoft versions

Yes, I placed I386 in C:
I used the I386 zipped files in C:\windows\source\winxp\i386 and extracted them to a new folder at C:\I386.I am thinking that it's the same files as in the winxp cd i386. But it's still looking for the winxp cd everytime i run sfc scan.

Just try the sfc /scannow from the run box and insert cd when it asks, I have to put it in my cdr-rw for it to recognise it putting it in my dvd drive does not work.

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the suggestion, but the thing is the cd drive is not working at the moment (hardware failure) and may take several days to be replaced.

The issue here is why windows keep on looking for the winxp cd even after the registry edit I made. Is the registry address "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup" the correct one to edit? Have I overlooked any setting?
I previously ran adaware thinking the initial error was caused by it, but nope. Any more suggestions guys? Really need your help on this...

Not sure (this is 98), take a look at:
HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/applets/system file checker
Best

Yep, that's the link I was trying to follow.
I'll try other stuff and update this thread if I did fix it. But suggestions are still welcome!

Hi Warren,
I just checked my XP machine and it would not run there either, my CD is copied to my I: drive. Changed the key you mentioned and it worked fine.
What are you using for the source path at that key? As per post #1, it should be C:\
(not C:\I386\), it needs to be one level up from the i386 folder.Best
