I downloaded a Pop up stopper called:SpyBot from PCAnywhere site. Somehow I deleted some folders along with its content that at the moment I thought I followed the instruction correctly.
The end result is I can't run any .exe, can't install any software, can't even re-install windowXP.Everytime I try to run a .exe file or try to install a new software or when I just turn on my computer I get several of this messages windows:
Window can not open this file (then the name of the file show up. For example conf.exe or QuicktimePlayer.exe etc.)
To open this file windows need to know what program created it.
Windows can go on line to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of program on your computer. Then there are 2 radio buttuons:
1.Use the web service to find the appropriate program
2. Select the program from the listThen there are OK button and cancel button
I've searched this forum for tips on how to fix the problem when computer can't run .exe
I even downloaded a zip file from :
http://www.dougknox.com/ In the left column click on WinXP fixes, then in the main window click on file association fixes.
Download and run the .exe file association fixBut when I got the zip file, I can't even unzip it!
at some point I got this message:This file doesnot have program associated with it for performaing this action. Create an association in the fokder options control panel.
I'm not a computer literate person, only know some very basic stuff. Please help when you know how to fix this problem. Thank you so much!!!!

have you tried system restore? If so, boot from the XP CD, go past the the recovery console and reinstall windows "repair this installation". good luck.

Before you do that -
I don't have Spybot but doesn't it have some feature whereby you can restore what you deleted - an undo button or anything like that ?

Mega, That .zip file you downloaded from the dougknox site try right clicking on it and click "extract all" and extract it to a folder (i.e My Documents)After you extract it go into the folder you extracted it to and find the "xp_exe_fix.reg" file and double click it. This will merge the contents into your registry and should correct your problem.
