Comment:

I downloaded a bunch of songs to my puter and named all the songs by Group, Album and Song. I used to be able to edit them and now I can't.

Since I'm partitioning my C:\, when I try to move these songs over, they're renamed to something like "IN9A34~1". Shorter names I can just click inside and rename them, others [like the funky one above] I can right click on and hit Properties to rename them properly. But the ones with the long titles, when I try to right click, there's no Properties available. If I try to click inside the name, I get a 'bing' for an error.

If I highlight two or more of these songs with long names and right click, I get a Properties, but under General, it says 0 files, 0 folders and the Archive and Hidden is checked. I uncheck them but they resort back to checked when I Apply and close it.

I tried using Advanced Editor in WMP, but can't do it through there apparently. I also tried reseting all my folders back to Default Settings, but that didn't help either.

Any idea on what suddenly caused this and how do I fix it??

Thanks

"IN9A34~1" is a short 'DOS' file name. You aren't by any chance trying to rename them in the CMD mode, are you?

No, Windows renamed it that on it's own b/c it was too long.

I've been trying to edit them in DOS, but keep getting a Syntax error. Took me 3 tries just to get the PATH right and 2 tries to get the song name right and then to find out it won't work?!?!?!?!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

The windows maximum file name length is about 255 characters. Are yours anywhre near that long?

The maximum DOS file name length is 8 charactersn for the name and 3 for the extension.

Sorry about that. I just tried it and it appears that the XP DOS 'can' handle long file names, but not spaces.

The longest one I have in the folder I'm still trying to work on is:
INXS - Stay Young 1979 - 1982 - 37 - The One Thing (Wanda Beach Double J Concert 1982).mp3 which is a total of 90 characters [including spaces]

I found a neat little program called Rename Master, but I keep getting Access Violation errors and can't do anything with it yet :(

My guess is that it's not a length problem. More likely it's an illegal character somewhere in the name. I've seen that before when you download a file from a PC that uses a system other than windows. That was a long time ago and I can't remember how to get around it. Maybe someone else knows. Meanwhile I'll do some searching.

Can you move the file?

Try this: If you can move the file, move it to an empty folder. Go to Dos, go to that folder and type:
ren *.* INXS.mp3

Make sure that you are in the right folder, or it could cause a catastrophe.
Maybe you better type

ren *.mp3 inxs.mp3

Ok...

XpUser: I've been going thru it, but of course, the access violation I'm getting isn't even on the net. It's "Access violation at address 00404A9E in module 'RenameMaster.exe'. Read of address 706D2E6B" if that means anything to anyone.

ham30: I didn't download the files with those names. I renamed them all myself and some of these files have been on my puter for a couple years with no problem.

And no, I can't either move nor delete the files. I can't rename them in DOS as there's too many spaces [I'm guessing] - I get a Syntax error.

When I right click on these files, I don't get a Properties, I get a different menu that gives me the options of 'Play' [which doesn't work], 'Import into Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition', 'Add to Now Playing List', 'Add to Playlist', 'Add to Sync List', 'Add to Burn List', 'Open With', and 'Send To'. These files are ALL .mp3's.

In one folder, there's 15 songs I can't rename. If I do the REN *.mp3 inxs.mp3 won't that mess up as there's more than one?

In researching, I did find out you can edit your Registry so you can rename long files [courtesy of Microsux] but, it'll only take effect for anything saved AFTER the changes, won't affect anything already messed up BEFORE the changes. Figures.

Another thing that's getting me... which I figure is the MAIN root of my problem... each of the long file names' attributes are set at Read-Only and Hidden and I can't change them. They both resort back to checked when I close it.

Yup, that's why I said to move it to an empty folder. But since you can'r move it ...

I wonder if you can use a variation on that. Do a rename with the first few letters of the file name. For instance:

ren inxs*.mp3 inxs.mp3

The only reason I can think of for this happening is an intermittent memory or hard drive failure at one time. If you originally named them, the file names must have somehow been corrupted. I wonder if chkdsk would be able to fix it. Have you tried a
chkdsk /r
?

I figured it out!! This is why I couldn't rename the songs for MY problem [may be different for anyone else]...

Being a Virgo, I organize my puter like I do my house. For my music, I have the original 'My Music' folder and made an 'Our Music' folder. Music that I downloaded or uploaded went into 'My Music'. If I needed to edit songs - too much dead space at the beginning or end - they stayed there until they were done, then moved to 'Our Music'. Same with downloaded songs I hadn't listened to yet - if they're cut off, not complete or not the right song, I won't share until I make sure.

Once I've listened to and/or edited them, I create band name folders inside my 'Our Music'. If I have albums then I create folders for those. Whole albums have a folder as well... so I end up with:
Our Music [folder 1] > INXS [folder 2]> Complete Albums [folder 3]> Michael Hutchence [folder 4]> Solo Album [folder 5]> and then the songs [each folder being inside the previous one]. So because the songs I couldn't edit were inside a folder that were inside a folder that were inside a folder, etc... it wouldn't let me rename.

When I transfered songs to the other puter, I ended up with a bunch of folders inside one with only the inner-most one having songs. I couldn't move the SONGS, but I COULD move the folder they were in: I could move each folder up one until I could move the songs from the original folder 5 into folder 1. I hope you're all following that LOL. I was moving them all around so I didn't have all these folders inside folders [I already had the folders set up on the other puter] and I wouldn't get confused. So since the previously un-renamable songs were not many folders in, I had no problem renaming them.

Thanks for all your help :) :) :) :) I really appreciate it :) :)
