Hey guys i have a big file i want to rename. The current file extension is .exe. I already went into folder options so windows would show the file extension. When i try to change the file of the .exe to .bin and press enter the whole folder and window freezes. When i control alt delete and end teh folder process windows just goes to the desktop without the taskbar and icons then i have to restart teh computer. I tried restarting in safe mode wiht command prompt and renaming ti there. In command prompt i navigate to teh folder where the file is located and i type rename xxx.exe xxx.bin (xxx is just used here nto really file name) and it says syntax of command is wrong. I also try ren instead of rename,, no help.. is there anything i can do to rename this file without freezing thank you.

Perhaps you should try the wildcard. Hopefully that's the only exe file in the folder. If it it, go into the command prompt and type in "ren *.exe filename.bin" without the quotes. Just substiture filename with what you want to call it. If there is more than one exe file in the folder, just add a letter or two in front like ren file*.exe filename.bin
Hope that helps.
Kevin.

Try a workaround like copying it to a different location first and then renaming.
Is is in use? cuz that will present a whole different problem.
Zip the file and move it elsewhere before renaming.
This link downloads a progy called move on boot tht may let you rename when you reboot but I have not tried it.

Just some thoughts.Good luck
