I have an IBM thinkpad i was given to assist with my work. It had office XP installed on it. Unfortunately it did not have all components i needed installed.
As i don't own office XP, i decided to uninstall and put office 2000 on.
However it appears that the uninstall was not successful as when i try to install 2000 it tells me it has a newer version installed and therefore i can't access setup.
I've tried delteting office folder from registry, this made no difference. I have also tried downloading clean up utility from microsoft but this does not find office xp to remove.

You can't do a full and complete (or proper) uninstall of Office XP without using the CD's. You'll need to get those from the person who gave you the laptop, run a reinstall of Office and then uninstall it properly.

Successful Uninstall of Office XP depends on several factors including the SP status of Win XP (because of the type of Windows Installer it has) and the Office Updates already done before the attempt at uninstall. In your case the partial Registry key /value removal could have further complicated the problem to an unknown extend.
I suggest you take a look at this MSKB article for some more clues in your attempts to get rid of the program that refuses to leave your system even when you try to discard it! M
