Can't record with microphone

I can't record sound using my new microphone. I have installed new drivers for the onboard Avance soundcard. In the win help it says something about microsoft office but I must be able to record sound without Office. I have tried the Sound Recorder under Entertainment but no signal is detected. I have also run some test on the soundware but no signal is detected. I have tried both inputs on the computers back. any ideas?

Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar and choose open volume control. Click on the options tab at the top and place a check mark by the mic. Then click on the options tab again and choose advanced controls. That should put the mic and the advanced tab under it in the volume contorl panel. Click on the advanced tab under mic and put a check mark in the box that says microphone boost and make sure the mute button is not muted under mic volume.

Dont forget the boost button also under the advanced tab. That will make it a whole lot louder.
