I can't seem to read any of my data cd's in either my HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B or my HP DVD Writer 400c. Both have the same problem only able play audio cd's but can't read data cd's. I've tried reinstalling the drivers but that didn't work. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks,
Rustycage

Do you have access to another PC? If you do can these CD be read satisfactorily?

I have seen where an older drive would not read a newer burned Cd and a newer drive would not read an older burned Cd. I don't know if that may be your issue or not.

I don't think that's the problem because I didn't have a problem before. It just started happening.

try opening My Computer, right click each drive, properties, Auto play and make some changes there. There is also a registry setting but I will have to find it and get back .

I tried changing the settings to Autoplay through my computer but it won't allow me to do that.

There is one other setting that will effect the drives and that is DmA mode if it available to your system.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
3. Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.
4. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
5. Click the controller that you you want to configure DMA/PIO settings for.
6. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
7. In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.
