My laptop plays DVDs fine, but when it comes to any other kind of CD it gives me the following message: "windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows."
I've tried to troubleshoot my CD/DVD driver and have looked for updates. But everything seems to be fine. I doubt that this is a driver problem, because I can play DVDs. Also, when I play the same CDs in different computers, they play just fine! Please help me out! I've been searching for solutions for the past few hours and can't get a helpful answer. thanks and I'm waiting to hear from you. Please note that I cannot reinstall the drivers on my computer, because my laptop won't read the contents of the installation CDs.

I know it's not the same error, but I would still check into resetting the Registry Key responsible for playing your CDs by following the instructions in the MS KB.

You might look to reinstall the cd drivers. They are different than the dvd drivers.

See if you can boot your computer with a CD such as a Windows XP CD or Dell recovery disc. (You might have to press a function key as your computer is first starting up to get a "select boot device" menu.)

If booting doesn't work, you may have a hardware problem or a dirty CD laser lens that need cleaned.
