Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, 4 cpu/2.80GHz 504 MB RAM
only 1 computer/1 printer, Roadrunner lite internet. No network/other computers/printers. Can print word/excel/pdf/notepad but nothing off internet sites (unless doc converts to pdf). bought computer used from a legit computer store 6/26/09, they rechecked it 7/8/09 - all ok they said (30 day warr over now). used cd printer driver, pop-up tab says new hardware recognized but not really. Just did a system restore back to 6/26/09. pls help, my little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Xerox Workcenter 470cx. have done 2 reinstalls of cd printer driver but same situation, says it's there, but still will not print yet and when I do the reinstall of printer driver, it will also tell me the cd is not there (lite is lit and can hear it running when I do a run on that drive). don't want to do cut/paste, or Print Screen. I have gone into "Connect to Printer" and selected the Xerox but on print display choices screen, it will not show LPT1 even after that. Thks mkh

What type of data connection does this hardware use? Is it a parallel port cable or USB cable?

Below is a link to the Xerox site with drivers and other information. Click on the installation instructions link in the middle of the page.

parallel port plugged in and fastened securely. xerox printer is 2001 vintage. All connections are correctly done in all regards. Again, I can print via word/excel/notepad, and any pdf docs..... problem is just not printing anything from internet websites. Since hooking up to this new computer, even screen that pops up when I print from other places is completely different. Had already previously gone to Xerox website prior & downloaded print driver, same thing happened. And, when selecting printer upon installation, Xerox WC 470cx was not avail; only 470 (no cx). If I select print option, choices are MS Windows Network, MSHome, and several "owner" printer locations, one of which IS Xerox WC 470cx (oddly enough since it's not available on download from Xerox), which of course I choose, but nothing still happens! Does not recognize LPT1 at all. AARRGH!

So, is your Parallel port installed and working properly in Device Manager? If so, is the correct TYPE of parallel port selected in the BIOS. Are you using a known good Bi-directional cable to connect the printer?

1)yes - conf in dev mgr (as far as my knowledge of this goes). 2 and 3) not sure where to go to find exact answers (can you tell me where to find/confirm and correct if not?)However, I still have to ask, if I can print some things but not others, would that not tell me I am ok on those 2 items? I did go through each item that tells me "device working properly". When I go into system mgr, then hardware, then device mgr shows 2 separate items: first one shows Other Devices which shows the Xerox WC 470cx printer as LPT1.4, but then below that 2nd item is for Communications Port (COM1) and ECP Port (LPT1* showing Owner... as noted below). When I print docs, printer location shows as owner-G1DBF70BD (not Xerox WC or either LPT1 or LPT1.4 (any problem with 1 vs. 1.4?) As Windows HCL list does not offer Xerox W/C 470cx only 470, so perhaps internet printing capability not compatible/available after all, only simple word-type processing? Last year's computer was Gateway 2000 which printed great from internet. Wish I could do a remote access w/you. thanks, mkh

All good questions for which I have no answers. Maybe it is because of the hour. I will mark this thread for review and look tomorrow with a fresh mind.

Your problem must be related to the path the files are sent down. Check what the default printer is for your browser. It may be a different printer or just named slightly different or the location of the printer may be incorrect.

Whatever program you are using to read PDF files evidently has the path right.
