I can't play files with .mp4 extension. Do I need to install some kind of codec, or download a program to play them? Is there a decent piece of freeware out there that can help me? I have just a couple of mp4 files that I would like to watch, so there is no need to buy a program. Thanks!

Install 3ivx from HERE. It includes a media splitter to allow you to play .mp4 files in any directshow or vfw enabled media player, such as Windows Media Player or bsplayer. It also includes an AAC audio decoder needed for the audio in the .mp4 file.
Hope this helps :)
