I might be totally wrong about this but, don't you need to install divx codec for avi files to work?

Download the newest Divx program, 5.0. This should easily solve your problem.

DivX files use the extension .AVI, But the different between these two is that DivX is heavily compressed, whereas AVI is uncompressed. If you try to play Avi files (uncompressed) when download is not finished, i.e. incomplete file, (works for mpeg too) WMP can do just fine. But WMP can't deal with unfinished DivX files. Error message like that pops up whenever I try to play DivX before the download is complete.

DIVX is not the only AVI codec. Nor are all the others uncompressed. There are probably close to 20 different codecs that are used for AVI compression.
Now back to the original problem. Lack of the correct codec is not going to cause the media player to crash. All a missing codec will do is cause either the video or the audio to not work. You have something corrupt in the install of the media player. Try removing it, then re-installing it.
