I have windows XP home edition but i can't ping my own IP address at the command prompt, it just gives me "destination unreachable"

This is with zonealarm OFF to (i have no router or anything else)and computer is not connected to another computer so techincally its "disconnected" but i should be able to ping myself right?

I have tried uninstalling all the protocols down to tcp/ip then shutting down and pulling the card out (its ISA only have one slot) booting it back up without it then putting it back in but it still doesn't ping

any ideas??

what ip address are you pinging? You never mention putting one in the tcp/ip properties.

can you ping 127.0.0.1? That is the ip loopback address. If ip is working you should get a response.

What is the result of running ipconfig from a cmd prompt?

I have 10.10.10.1 for IP and 255.255.255.0 for subnet

always worked fine before but not now

ipconfig lists my ethernet card and stuff but that's it, the "media is disconnected" because i'm not hooked up to another computer right now....

pinging 127.0.0.1 works fine but still doesn't work on 10.10.10.1 and have tried a few different ip address's

thanks

goto start>run> type "cmd"
at the prompt type:
"netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt"

this will reinstall you tcp/ip ,usualy fixes that problem
