I cannot open a works document from my desktop. Or if I have a short cut to a folder with works documents in it, I can open the folder but cannot open the works document(s). I have to go into the Works program and open the documents from there, so any type of shortcut that I have on my desktop is worthless. When I try to open the document, it says 'Open file as' and gives me a choice of word processor, data base, or spreadsheet and gives me a choise of DOS or windows. No matter what I choose, it opens the document with a bunch of greek looking letters. If I click 'help' it tells me that it cannot find the cd rom file that the document is in, and gives me a choice to select A, C, D, or E. When I select C, it says 'Cannot find multimedia works for windows'. It is not a multimedia file, only a document like a letter or list or whatever. Any help or suggestions? Katrinka

Is M$ Works program installed on the computer? If not, you need to install it.

Try System Restore to a date when all was good.
Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools

Using System Restore too many times can cause
more harm than good. After doing a restore
that does not fix a problem, then UNDO the
Restoration, and try another restore point, or
just do the UNDO.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, XP User, MS Works is installed on this computer and the file extension of the document(s) is .wps.

Chuck2, this has been a problem for as long as I can remember. My techy guy said maybe something was corrupt, but doesn't really sound too hopeful about a fix. Until the last few months I just worked around it, but have been promoted recently and have many documents in Works and shortcuts on my desktop would save me a LOT of time.

Maybe I will just have to work around it, or try to change some of the documents to Word??

To setup which program opens a file you can do the following:
Right click the file.
Select 'Open With'.
Scan the list shown to see if the program is there.
If not, Browse to the folder with the 'Works.exe' file (it might have a different name). I don't have Works so I don't know the exact name.
It will probably be in 'c:\Program Files' somewhere.
Select it and then select 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

aeqis, thanks for the response.
I have already done this and it still does the same as explained in my initial post. The first box I see on the screen says 'Open file as: (for example) BJCFOU~1.WPS as a ' and then it gives me option of word processor, spreadsheet, or data base.

The next screen says 'Startup' and gives me options of word processor, data base, startup, works wizard, open existing file'. Even if I click 'open existing file' it takes me through a myriad of options: file name, directory, list of file types, drive and it never opens the document.

Try this:

You need to either browse or search your machine for the file WksWP.exe and note the path to it. Most likely it is in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works

Once you have established where WksWP.exe resides, then find a wps file on your machine (rather than a shortcut to it). Next use the Browse button on your Open With screen and work through the path right through to WksWP.exe itself.

Finally, tell it to always open with this program (if you get that option).

If this doesn't fix it then you have some sort of system corruption (possibly in Works).

Another option would be this:
Open 'My Compter' > Tools > Folder options > File Types tab.
Scan through the list for a Works file (WPS?).
Select it and click the 'Change' button.
Scan through the list for 'Works' and select it.
If it's not in the list, select Browse and browse to the Works program (WksWP.exe ?) and select it.
Then select 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
Click OK.

Woo hoo! Derek, It worked! I had to change the 'open with' to read 'always open this type of document with Microsoft Works Word Processor' rather than 'Microsoft Works for Windows'. I did as you said and tracked it down through search and browse.

Thanks a lot! What a time savings!

Glad you're fixed up. I think the alternative given by aegis in #7 would have also done the trick - many ways.

Thx for popping back to let us know.

Derek, Absolutely. I appreciate ALL the responses I received on this issue. I had it posted on another forum for awhile and received only one question and no responses with assistance. I think everyone on here was very responsive. I only wish I knew enough about computers to help other people, too. Best wishes.

Looking back over this, I think you were originally associated with the shortcut which opens the "whole of Works Suite" (WP, Database, Spreadsheet etc) rather than the Works Word Processor itself.

As for helping, well you never know - we all had to start somewhere.
