Can't open Wordpad files from disc

April 13, 2005 at 15:03:51
Specs: ?, ?

My old computer had Windows 95 and I saved a lot of my Wordpad programs onto CD. When I bought my new computer (windowsXP) I had no problem viewing the files from the CD by using Wordpad. However, now I notice that I can't open these files!. A box appears saying "Can not load word for Windows 6.0 files". I had no problem before but now it won't work (could the SP2 have something to do with this?). I checked out the microsoft website and they don't really give any solution to the problem. It only suggests Microsoft Office Word. I clicked on this on my menu and it requires my product key (I entered the number and it says it's not valid).

Is there any other simple way to open these files?.

Hi Shaun. Take a look at the following webpage:

"Is there any other simple way to open these files?" Right click on the file and select "Open with ..." and then "Wordpad." Or instead of Wordpad, select "Choose Program ..."; then select Wordpad and check the box saying "always open this type of file with this program."

Of course, I'm assuming that you're satisfied with using wordpad, rather than figuring out why your Word key is not accepted.

Thanks for your help!.

Chris: I checked out the site. Very interesting. I was able to view these wordpad documents on my WindowsXP "prior" to ungrading to SP2. If I download that software, will this then allow me to open these files without any problem?.

Terry: I tried your suggestion but it didn't work. These wordpad files (on disc) won't open with Wordpad or any other program. I do have Microsoft Office on my menu but I'm not sure whether it's the actual thing or just a limited trial. It does ask me for the computer product key, but it won't accept what I type in.

I have no problems opening these files on my sister's computer (which also has XP). However, she has never upgraded to SP2, so I'm wondering if maybe this is the problem.

"However, she has never upgraded to SP2, so I'm wondering if maybe this is the problem."

It must be! I just checked (Help - About ...) my Wordpad and it's version 5.1 ... XP SERVICE PACK 2! So, obviously there was a SP2 update to Wordpad. Why it won't open your files sounds to me like a Micros**t bug, or nastiness (who needs their old files anyhow?).

The wordpad.exe that is executed is in folder C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories. I don't know if this would work, but you could try renaming it to (say, SP2wordpad.exe) and copy your sister's older wordpad.exe.
