Cannot open pps attachment direct in Outlook Express. Error says "no program associated with this type file, go to control panel and do..." I have associated extension with MS Power Point Viewer, and can now save the attachment on my harddrive, click on it and open with no problem, but still not open direct in Outlook Express. Any suggestions??? Thank you!

granny7, Follow the instructions at the link below. The Automated Fix is painless.

This is a common problem with OE.
Download PPSFix.zip
Unzip the file and run the utility. Select the file types that you want to fix, and then click Fix. Note that you need to login as administrator in order to use this utility.

Yes, big thank you to each who took the time to reply to my post! I'll try the suggested fix and let you know if it takes care of the problem.
The question was for my neighbor, an 87 year old who only a couple of years ago decided to buy a computer and learn to use it for writing his biography and keep in touch with his family. He receives at least one pps attachment every day, the folder is now around 400 files and growing. I have written instructions for him to save to his harddrive, even did a 'print screen' step-by-step for him, but he gets confused by the process. If I can fix Outlook Express so he can simply double click to open those pps attachments, it would stop a great source of frustration for us both.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
Best wishes to all,

Yes, he opens photos and music files fine; they simply load into the text portion of the emails, they also show as attachments at top of the mail so that he can save them to his harddrive.
It appears that the only attachments that he has trouble with are the pps and ppt, both associated with Power Point. He is using the Power Point "Viewer" (downloaded from the Microsoft site), not the actual Power Point program. The viewer works fine when you click directly on the file after it is saved to his harddrive, however, when you click to open pps attachment direct from Outlook Express,(not yet saved on his harddrive) it gives "no program associated" error instead of activating the viewer.
He has been very ill the past few days since this posting and when I talk with him, he doesn't feel like having me come try to fix it... says he'll call in a few days when he is feeling better. (His computer room is in the basement) Meanwhile, I'm sorry to keep you folks in limbo while waiting for resolution of this question...
Thank everyone for your response and for patience while you wait for me to try your suggestions...

How about a right-click on the file and Open With? Or Save the file, then make sure and associate pps files with the Powerpoint Viewer.
Life's more painless for the brainless.

Yes, he can right click the pps attachment to save it to his harddrive with no problem, and then double click the file (on his harddrive) to open it with Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and it works fine that way. I have already associated pps files with the PowerPoint viewer, and the computer automatically uses it to open pps files AFTER they are saved from the email onto his harddrive.
On my own computer, pps attachments open direct from the email, but I do have the program PowerPoint installed, not just the Viewer.
I talked with him this evening and he seems to be feeling stronger today... Hopefully he will let me come check the machine soon so I can install software mentioned in the earlier replies... (I have printed the posts and made notes to take with me when I go...)
Again, we appreciate your taking the time to send reply...

I was able to access the computer last week via remote Logmein, and you're right, the PPSFix.zip procedure took less than a minute to complete. He is now able to open PPS attachments direct from Outlook Express without having to first save them to his harddrive. A ZILLION thanks to all!!!
